Suwanee Electrician FAQ
1. What is a GFCI Device?
Be aware, electrical current "leaking" from an outlet could be lethal. When water creates an electrical conduit or electricity from an outlet "escapes,"
that excess or misdirected electricity can escape into a person! A GFCI protected outlet is a safety device designed to instantly shut off power when it
detects electricity heading in any other direction than back to the power grid.

2. Why Have GFCI's?
GFCI's save lives. GFCI invention (and inclusion in the National Electrical Code) has saved hundreds of lives. The US Consumer Safety Committee
(
click here to read the CSC Fact Sheet on GFCI Devices in The Home) has reported that two thirds of the 300 household electrical deaths that have
happened annually would have been avoided with a properly installed GFCI protected outlet.

3. Where Should I Have GFCI's Installed?
Think Water! The parts of your home that are in contact with water such as kitchens and bathrooms need GFCI protection. Outdoor outlets, especially
those close to water (spas, pools, lakes, hoses) also require GFCI protection. Recently, jurisdictions began requiring garages, unfinished
basements, and crawl spaces to be protected because these are parts of the home where ground faults occur frequently and residents are likely  to
experience electrical shock. Here's a shocking fact.... TE finds that only approximately 50 percent of the homes inspected have GFCI's in the kitchen.

4. How Do I Know if My GFCI's are Working Correctly?
GFCI outlets have a  button labeled "test." When you press the test button, you should hear a "snap" as the outlet shuts off. Next press the "reset"
button to restore the outlet's power. Immediately replace a GFCI that does not reset. The best & most accurate way to know if a GFCI is working is to
test it with a GFCI tester. These can be purchased at local hardware stores. An important part of our whole house electrical safety checks is making
sure that your home is GFCI PROTECTED!

5. My GFCI Trips All The Time; is the GFCI Bad?
Could be, or it is likely that is only doing its job; which is protecting you and you family from ground faults. The circuit should be checked out to insure
there isn't a ground fault or leak in the wiring. Frequently, appliances that have ground faults (electrical leaks) cause GFCI outlets to "trip." It is always
a fantastic idea  to have any appliance that is tripping a GFCI device looked at by a certified electrician to ensure its functionality.
